Andrew was Professor of Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) and Deputy Director of the interdisciplinary Learning Technology Research Institute (LTRI) at London Metropolitan University. The Institute contributes to Education for Research Assessment purposes, which is ranked in the top fifth for the UK (with ouput ratings of 'world-leading' and 'internationally excellent'). In recent years the LTRI has attracted over £9 Million in competitive funds for collaborative research and development projects (e.g. three JISC funded Digital Dialogue Game projects, CETL in Reusable Learning Objects, EC funded MATURE: Continuous social learning in knowledge networks), with partners from the Academic and Commercial sectors in the UK and European Community. Andrew's work is best described as Deep Learning Design (or DLD), which is a design based research approach to TEL that is particularly focused on learning and teaching in the Web2.0 landscape and beyond. Andrew leads the research group in Learning Interaction and Dialogue Design (LIDD), which focuses on developing near-future web-technologies within a socio-cultural framework, that emphasises new or emerging forms of media, dialogue and meaning-making on the net. Andrew has over 100 publications, is an active member of international and national committees and working groups and has been a key investigator on projects that have attracted over £5.3 Million in competitive funding. Previously he was Director of the Dialogue and Design for New Media Research Group (D&D RG) that he established at the UK Open University whilst working in the Institute of Educational Technology (IET). He gained his PhD in Psychology and Intelligent Media design whilst working as a Research Fellow in the Computer Based Learning Unit (CBLU) at the University of Leeds and is a Chartered Psychologist. Current interrelated foci of Andrew's research are: the changing nature and practices of communication rich learning; designing complex socio-technical systems; serious and social games; contemporay theory; and generally, designing for the interplay of informal and formal learning (related to education or learning at work). All these strands are exemplified within ongoing initiatives in Digital Dialogue Games and Learning as Knowledge Maturing. These lines of work build upon a significant portfolio of previous projects that includes: intelligent agent-based training simulations; pioneering networked and multimedia learning support systems (before the Web); computational modelling of learning dialogue; and, generally, the development of new theoretical and pedagogical frameworks for learning in the digital age.
